Panasonic is currently the only company making Freesat recorders with a built-in hard disk, Blu-ray and DVD recording, and the Panasonic DMR-BS880 is the latest in this trend. The Panasonic DMR-BS880, is at it's core based on the 850 below, with a 500GB Hard Disk drive, with two Freesat tuners in its innerds (which will let you watch a programme while recording another, or recording two programmes at once while watching a saved programme). You can also burn recordings to a DVD or Blu-ray enabling you to keep recordings for as long as the disks last. Unfortunately there's no component outputs, however these days you'll be hard pushed to find a TV that doesn't support HDMI, so that shouldn't be an issue. It comes with HDMI outputs, composite video, coaxial and scart.

The DMR-BS880 comes with the best possible quality recordings, storing the actual bitstream to disk, so when you're watching back, you're getting the exact same picture that was orginially recieved by the Panasonic.

It's really really easy to transfer recordings onto disc with the BS880, with different modes of compression available so you can determine exactly how much you want to fit onto one disc. As with many modern boxes, some programmes will unfortunately not be able to be burned to disc due to copyright protection that is enforced by the broadcasters. However these programmes are clearly marked in the on-screen guide.

Something which is great on this box, which for example you don't get on Sky+HD (at the time of writing) is that if you try to tune into an SD channel, and the same programme is showing on a HD channel at the same time, the box will alert you of this so you can always be sure you're watching in the best quality possible!

Something which is pretty incredible is support for other Panasonic boxes on the network, allowing the other boxes to stream recordings made by the box, enabling you to watch a programme you recorded on this box in another room!
